Walter Cronkite Died!!

Walter Cronkite, who personified television journalism for more than a generation as anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News," has died. CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. Friday with his family by his side at his home in New York after a long illness. He was 92.

Known for his steady and straightforward delivery, his trim moustache, and his iconic sign-off line -"That’s the way it is" - Cronkite dominated the television news industry during one of the most volatile periods of American history. He broke the news of the Kennedy assassination, reported extensively on Vietnam and Civil Rights and Watergate, and seemed to be the very embodiment of TV journalism.

"Cronkite came to be the sort of personification of his era," veteran PBS Correspondent Robert McNeil once said. "He became kind of the media figure of his time. Very few people in history, except maybe political and military leaders, are the embodiment of their time, and Cronkite seemed to be."

At one time, his audience was so large, and his image so credible, that a 1972 poll determined he was "the most trusted man in America" - surpassing even the president, vice president, members of Congress and all other journalists. In a time of turmoil and mistrust, after Vietnam and Watergate, the title was a rare feat - and the label stuck.

"For decades, Walter Cronkite was the most trusted voice in America," said President Barack Obama in a statement. "His rich baritone reached millions of living rooms every night, and in an industry of icons, Walter set the standard by which all others have been judged."

Mr. Obama said that Cronkite calmly shared the world's news while never losing his integrity.

"But Walter was always more than just an anchor," Mr. Obama said. "He was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world. He was family. He invited us to believe in him, and he never let us down. This country has lost an icon and a dear friend, and he will be truly missed."

Cronkite's achievements were remarkable for a man whose beginnings were anything but remarkable.

Walter Leland Cronkite was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on November 4, 1916, the only child of a dentist father and homemaker mother. When he was still young, his family moved to Texas. One day, he read an article in "Boys Life" magazine about the adventures of reporters working around the world - and young Cronkite was hooked. He began working on his high school newspaper and yearbook and, in 1933, he entered the University of Texas at Austin to study political science, economic and journalism. He never graduated. He took a part time job at the Houston Post, left college to do what he loved: report.

After working as a general assignment reporter for the Post and a sportscaster in Oklahoma City, Cronkite got a job in 1939 working for United Press. He went to Europe to cover World War II as part of the "Writing 69th," a group of reporters who found themselves covering some of the most important developments in the war, including the D-Day invasion, bombing missions over Germany, and later, the Nuremburg war trials. In 1940, he married Mary Elizabeth Maxwell - known as "Betsy" - and for the next six decades she was the dutiful reporter’s wife, enduring sometimes long separations while he covered the world, and raising three children. Cronkite once wrote about her: ''I attribute the longevity of our marriage to Betsy's extraordinary keen sense of humor, which saw us over many bumps (mostly of my making), and her tolerance, even support, for the uncertain schedule and wanderings of a newsman."

While working for the UP, Cronkite was offered a job at CBS by Edward R. Murrow - and he turned it down. He finally accepted a second offer in 1950, and stepped into the new medium of television. In the early '50s, it was a medium many of the "serious" journalists at CBS and elsewhere viewed with skepticism, if not disdain. Radio and print, they contended, were for real reporters; television was for actors or comedians.

At first, it seemed an unlikely fit. Walter Cronkite, with his serious demeanor and unpretentious style - honed by his years of unvarnished reporting at UP - was named host of "You Are There" in which key moments of history were recreated by actors. Cronkite was depicted on camera interviewing "Joan of Arc" or "Sigmund Freud." But somehow, he managed to make it believable.

The young director of the series, Sidney Lumet said he picked Cronkite for the job because "the premise of the series was so silly, so outrageous, that we needed somebody with the most American, homespun, warm ease about him."

During his early years at CBS, Cronkite was also named host of "The Morning Show" on CBS, where he was paired with a partner: a puppet named Charlemagne. But he distinguished himself with his coverage of the 1952 and 1956 political conventions and as narrator of the documentary series "Twentieth Century." In 1961, CBS named him the anchor of the "CBS Evening News" - a 15 minute news summary anchored for several years by Douglas Edwards.

At the time, the broadcast lived in the long shadow cast by NBC’s Huntley-Brinkley Report, the most popular television newscast in the country. Expectations for the Cronkite newscast were not high. But in 1963, the broadcast was expanded to 30 minutes - and Cronkite won a title for which he had long campaigned, Managing Editor. The added time gave the broadcast more depth and variety, and the title gave Cronkite more influence over the content and coverage.

And it came at a significant time. In September of that year, Cronkite launched the expanded program with an extended interview with President John F. Kennedy. Two months later, it was Cronkite who broke into the soap opera "As The World Turns" to announce that the president had been shot - and later to declare that he had been killed.

It was a defining moment for Cronkite, and for the country. His presence - in shirtsleeves, slowly removing his glasses to check the time and blink back tears - captured both the sense of shock, and the struggle for composure, that would consume America and the world over the next four days.

Cronkite’s audience began to grow - but not quickly enough for network executives who, in 1964, decided to try an anchor team at the conventions - Robert Trout and Roger Mudd - to rival Chet Huntley and David Brinkley at NBC. Cronkite was not happy about the change, and viewer reaction was swift. Over 11,000 letters poured in protesting the switch. Network executives never tried that again. In 1966, The CBS Evening News began to overtake the Huntley-Brinkley report in the ratings, and in 1967 it took the lead. It remained there until Cronkite’s retirement in 1981.

They were years filled with astonishing change - and indelible history. In 1968, Cronkite returned from visiting Vietnam and declared on television:"It seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of Vietnam is a stalemate." President Lyndon Johnson, on hearing that, reportedly said, "If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost America." Not long after, Johnson declared his intention not to run for re-election. That same year saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy - two more shocking moments that bound the country together through the medium of television. Once again, as he had five years earlier, Cronkite was the steadying force during a time of national sorrow.

"It's a kind of chemistry," former Johnson aide and CBS News commentator Bill Moyers once said. "The camera either sees you as part of the environment or it rejects you as an alien body, and Walter had 'it,' whatever 'it' was."

One of Cronkite’s enthusiasms was the space race. And in 1969, when America sent a man to the moon, he couldn’t contain himself. "Go baby, go!," he said, as Apollo XI took off. He ended up performing what critics described as"Walter to Walter" coverage of the mission - staying on the air for 27 of the 30 hours that Apollo XI took to complete its mission.

Cronkite even managed to have a surprising influence on world affairs. In 1977, he interviewed Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat, who told Cronkite that, if invited, he’d go to Jerusalem to meet with Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The move was unprecedented. The next day, Begin invited Sadat to Jerusalem for talks that eventually led to the Camp David accords and the Israeli-Egyptian treaty.

In 1981, Cronkite announced he would retire at the age of 65, to make way for a new anchor in the chair, Dan Rather. A commentator in the New Republic said it was like "George Washington leaving the dollar bill." There were so many requests for interviews, eventually all of them were turned down.

In retirement, Cronkite kept busy with other projects - a short-lived magazine program on CBS called "Walter Cronkite's Universe," a few documentaries, plus a seat on the CBS board of directors. He spent a considerable amount of time at his summer home in Martha’s Vineyard, sailing the boat he named for his wife, "The Betsy." And he wrote his autobiography, "A Reporter’s Life," published in 1996.

In 2005, Cronkite’s wife Betsy died after a battle with cancer. His two daughters and son survive him.

While Cronkite kept a lower profile in his later years, he did make a significant contribution to the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric": it is his voice that has been used during the opening of the broadcast since its debut in 2006, bridging generations and signifying the newscast’s strong link to its storied past.

As Cronkite said on March 6, 1981, concluding his final broadcast as anchorman: "Old anchormen, you see, don't fade away, they just keep coming back for more. And that's the way it is."

©MMIX, CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.
I don't know yet. I think it'll be okay; she worked with my old boss when she was an intern and she was trained at another store by an exec. that I respect. So we shall have to wait and see.

In other news... nothing. There really isn't anything else going on right now.
Like I do whenever I'm home by myself, I pulled out a cd I hadn't listened to in years and listened to it. This time it was Adema, and track 10 is one of my favorite songs of all time, Speculum.

The song always makes me think of my grandfather, who died just before my sixth birthday. With all the wedding plans and medical issues that have been going on recently, I hadn't realised that the anniversary of his passing was just a few weeks ago. As I listened to the song today I remembered him and thought how happy he would be to see me getting married and I actually cried for a little while.

So, I went on Youtube and found a video for the song. I had thought to just get the song without any video (since none was ever made) but then I saw this video made using Final Fantasy Advent Children and I loved that movie (duh, I made icons from it) so I posted that one.

I warn you, the opening is weird because I guess the guy that made it is a little weird (don't quote me, I don't know this person), but the song and video mean a lot to me... so here goes.

<lj-embed id="7" />

What's the deal with...

I'm serious! For the past several days everyone at work has been asking if I'm nervous about my upcoming wedding. No, I'm not. I'm excited, but nobody has asked me if I'm 'excited'. For some reason, everyone assumes that the groom is nervous and the bride excited. Can't it be the other way around? Can't they both by excited or both nervous... well, not both nervous, chances are nothing would happen if they were both nervous, but seriously.

I can't wait for my wedding, its been coming along for so long now that I really just want it to come (plus I've been waiting for the food and cake). I love my fiance, and we've lived with each other for so long now that there aren't any fears or nervous feelings about living as a couple. We've been doing that already.

People need to stop making assumptions. You make an assumption and you're making an ass of yourself.

and

Seriously. I've already said a little about this in other posts, but I'm still pissed that all these really awesome people are dieing. The way its going somebody is going to die this sunday (my wedding) and it's going to be somebody famous that I like. Death happens in threes in hollywood, so I ask now...

who's next?
Last week it was Stan Winston, and now George Carlin. I only experienced his comedy in his later years, which I loved so much because he was angry about all the things I was angry about, since I was born in the 80's. This sucks, I need some young heroes... oh wait, can't count on that either, Heath Ledger is (while not neccessary a hero he was pretty freaking awesome) deceased.

FUCK!!!

Comedian George Carlin dead at 71

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Stand-up comedian George Carlin, who became famous for his biting anti-establishment brand of humor, has died in Los Angeles, his publicist confirmed Monday. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems and had survived three previous heart attacks, died at the Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday at about 6:00 pm (0100 GMT) after being admitted with chest pains.

The New York-born comic was best remembered for his famous routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television." The routine triggered a landmark Supreme Court lawsuit that shaped decency rules for US television and radio.

Carlin, who recently marked 50 years in showbusiness and was performing in Las Vegas, made 22 albums and won four Grammy Awards.

He authored several books, performed on dozens of television shows and appeared in numerous movies.

Born in 1937, Carlin dropped out of school as a 14-year-old and later joined the US Air Force. He got his first taste of standup in the late 1950s and made his television debut on "The Merv Griffin Show" in 1965.

He performed on seminal US network shows such as the "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show," where he regularly stood in for Johnny Carson.

But it was the edgier humor of the early 1970s and his "Dirty Words" skit that he will be best remembered for.

The routine saw him arrested for obscenity in 1972 at a comedy festival in Milwaukee and when the Pacifia radio station broadcast a version of it in 1973, the station was sued by the Federal Communications Commission.

The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled narrowly in favor of the FCC, a court order that established indecency regulation in US broadcasting.

Here's a video, not the famous Seven Words, but something that I connected with him on. Religion is Bullshit.

<lj-embed id="6" />

Last sunday (on my birthday no less) legendary monster-maker Stan Winston passed away. In terms of monster creation and sheer imagination, this man was my hero and I will always remember him so.

Stan Winston, legendary special-effects expert, died June 15 at the age of 62 from multiple myeloma. Winston earned four Oscars for his work on "Aliens," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Jurassic Park."

"Stan is a legend in the film industry whose passion and unparalleled talent brought the magic of storytelling to life on the screen for millions," said Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios, and a producer of "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk." "He was larger than life, and it was a lifelong dream fulfilled to have worked with him on 'Iron Man.' And while his legacy will endure through his movies, Stan will truly be missed."

All the practical suits in Marvel's first self-financed picture, "Iron Man," were built by Stan Winston Studios, who helped to bring this long-awaited super hero to life on the big screen.

Everyone at Marvel Entertainment extends heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the friends and family of Stan Winston.

Some of my favorite movie of all time where done by Stan.
That's right, today is my birthday. If I'm counting right, I'm now 24 years old (2008-1984=24)! Yay!

This is, however, the first year ever that I'm working on my birthday. It's not too bad, though I am missing out at dinner. Damn, that sucks. Yay for reeses. Thank you Rob for leaving a massive bowl of chocolate/peanut butter and a fridge full of cold water for <s>me</s> us.

Today is also fathers day, and I visited my dad today. Honestly, I almost didn't recognize him in that hospital bed. It sucked, and I feel like total crap seeing him like that... he was always my tough ass dad that could beat your dad's ass until he cries uncle like a little girl (no offense meant towards little girls). I hate hospitals, everyone does.
...with big ass bags?

The other security guard and I where wondering what the deal is with women and big bags? I mean, there are some bags that we see that are so big that they could probably hold a baby or even a small person. What is in there? Make-up (if you where a cosmetics dealers), medicine (if you where a pharmacist/drug dealer), women's products (yeah, if you where a whale), a book (perhaps a small library), a laptop (maybe with a lap to put it on); hell, you can have all of those things and the bag wouldn't even look like it was being used. It would take a cinder block to make the sides bulge!

As a request from all security guards in the world to people everywhere who actually own one of these god forsaken bags: throw them away! Buy something that holds what you need, not camping gear!

...with coming into a store three minutes before it closes?

What is your problem? Can you actually shop in three minutes? If you need to get a lot of shit, do it earlier; you obviously have some time on your hands. Is in an emergency? If so, try your luck at a 24-hour store, not one that closes at 10 PM!

Just because we have to let you into the building to shop doesn't mean we like it. Even worse, don't come in just before closing and expect to be allowed to shop for twenty minutes. Store closes at ten. All the registers are closed by 10:05. If you're still shopping, too friggin' bad!!!
HARTFORD, Conn. -- As the mercury climbed above 90 degrees on Monday, schools across the state began dismissing students early.

Tom Murphy, a spokesman for the Department of Education, said most schools in the state are not air conditioned. And many of Connecticut's 580,000 public school students could be left sweltering inside structures with no cross ventilation either.

Dozens of districts, including Catholic schools and technical schools, were closing early, canceling afternoon kindergarten or afternoon activities.

Schools in Bethlehem were dismissed early because of the heat, and parents were alerted by reverse voicemail and e-mail.

"I think if they went a full day today you wouldn’t have gotten much out of the kids," said Shannon Bauer, of Bethlehem.

Bethlehem school officials said they were considering dismissing students early on Tuesday as well.

Hartford Public Schools said that students of schools without air conditioning would be released early on Tuesday. School officials said parents of children who would be released early received letters.

The city of Waterbury announced on Monday afternoon that students of both public and parochial schools would be dismissed early on Tuesday.

Murphy said the partial day shouldn't pose a problem for any districts meeting the required 900 hours of instructional hours for the school year. State law gives local districts the authority to shorten school on any given day, on a case-by-case basis.

source

It's sad to think that we can't even afford to aircondition the schools these days; with all the budget cuts going on I'm surprised the schools still have electricity.

I'm not too fond of summer... I used to like it when I was younger and I didn't have to pay for the air conditioning and my parents had a good sized pool and I didn't have to deal with the heat if I didn't want too.

Now, I really really hate summer. The only good things about summer is my birthday and my upcoming wedding (yay!). I can't stand how people are like (in the winter) 'oh, its so cold, I can't wait for summer' and then (in summer) 'eww, its too hot, I can't wait for winter'.

NOT ME!! In winter I say "YAY WINTER" and in summer I say "DAMN GLOBAL WARMING!!!" Because I know that it was never this hot when I was a kid. I mean, its not even summer yet and the forecast in CT is a week of 90 degree weather, with Monday and Tuesday at a blistering 94 degrees each day. I even heard a nasty rumor about Tuesday reaching up even closer to the triple digits! And its not even summer.

Now, I don't have air conditioning because I know how damn expensive it is; and even if there was a pool at my apartment I wouldn't go because I know there'd be all kind of garbage floating around (they'd never clean it). The real problem is that the building I live in with my fiance is poorly designed, its like living at the top of a friggin' chimney. Every day in the apartment promises to be atleast ten degrees hotter than the outside air.

I can't wait for Tuesday (extreme sarcasm).

Right now, I'm really looking forward to two things; my wedding and then october 1st (September is no longer the first cool month of Autumn). If I could go from June 29th to October 1st like *snap* I would.

Can't it just go back to 75 degrees as a high?

I had forgotten that the song was on there and I really liked that song; so I went to see if there was a video of it on YouTube anywhere. While there was nothing official by the deftones, I found this video that was done with the move 'Sin City,' which itself is a pretty good movie.

<lj-embed id="2" />
